Born in the East End of London in the 1920s, Elizabeth Green was brought up above the family business. She spent much of her early life playing in the shop, under the watchful eye of her father whilst her mother supported the family through a number of jobs. The author tells of the happier moments of childhood, from first pets to early Christmas mornings, going to visit family on the train and little treats from her mother. But she also covers the difficult things such as illness and financial hardship, and the disappointments of childish expectations.
