Education is all about the betterment of the young of today, for their life in the future of tomorrow. In order to give education's pursuit direction and its purpose meaning, some idea of what it aims to result in is essential. It is with this "essential" in primary education that this book concerns itself. The history of the changing aims of primary education is not neglected nor are the influences on them of the major social and cultural changes of the twentieth century. Moreover, there is a clear focus on the practicalities, on how aims can be and are managed in the day to day realities of the primary school.
