In West-Friesland in the Netherlands is a village that has two churches, both dedicated to Saint Ursula. Many legends are associated with this saint but also local legends that have little to do with the more well-known tales and myths. Ursula was a popular saint in the Middles Ages, her cult becoming a good source of income for Cologne cathedral. But was there more to her story than can be read in Jacob de Voragine's Golden Legend? Were the chants composed by Hildegard of Bingen inspired by a real woman, Elisabeth of Schönau who was herself inspired by the legend of Ursula? And what did a sophisticated saint, venerated all over Europe have to do with a Northern Dutch village built on a salt marsh? This is her story.
