Mardale was one of the most pastoral and remote of all lakeland valleys. Manchester Corporation bought the valley. They demolished the village and built the Haweswater dam. By 1941, the valley had become a reservoir and its water was being piped to Manchester. Norman Nicholson tells the story of the demolition of the village, the building of the new settlement of Burnbanks and the construction of the immense dam. The book contains many photographs taken as the work was proceeding, which are published here for the first time.
