This External Research Program report focuses on the Plex as an affordable and sustainable housing form. It traces its evolution and documents several historical types of it. The report appraises the Plex's advantages and proposes several design alternatives that would adapt it to the needs of contemporary households. The adapted Plex emerges as a flexible and economic form of housing most suitable for meeting the need for affordable housing. It also is an ideal form for infill and for more compact new neighbourhoods.
