To mark the Whitby Friendship Rowing Club 125th anniversary the Management Committee decided to publish a second volume of the club's history spanning more than 50 years up to the jubilee celebrations in 2004. The first book, Friendship 1879-1951, has proved a valuable record and source of reference in a traditional local sport dating back to the famous German Ocean lifeboat races on the North East coast and faithful to the clinker-built style of vessel favoured by the Vikings. The new volume records the club's progress and achievements from 1952 involving successive generations of Whitby families in a town visited by many thousands of holidaymakers each year. A historic era has seen the club progress from a floating boat-house to a fine shore base in a former harbourside school.
