Tony Maggs was South Africa's first Grand Prix ace of the modern era. He achieved two second place finishes in the 1962 and 1963 French Grand Prix as a works Cooper F1 driver, and finished seventh in the driver's championship in 1962. He excelled in other disciplines too, twice winning the Kyalami Nine-Hour, and had a number of other top-six sports car finishes, including at Le Mans and Sebring. Having made his international mark, he quickly disappeared from the racing scene, preferring a life among nature as a farmer and conservationist. He passed away in the Cape in June 2009.
