In 1954 he joined up with the well known California hot-rodder, Ak Miller, as a crew member for Miller’s second run at the Carrera Panamericana. Again, Coltrin took his camera with him. As sports car racing grew in popularity, Coltrin began to attend those early races at places like Palm Springs, Pebble Beach and Willow Springs where more unusual color photographs were taken.
