Arising from a conference held in September 1989, the articles in this volume deal with the shaping of Europe into a political, economic, and cultural structure, and the birth of an era whose end is now being celebrated. They indicate that the shaping of postwar Europe was a multi-dimensional process, marked by failure, misperception, and unresolved problems as well as by the achievement of stability and partial unity.
