Quite possibly one of the frankest explorations of the male view of women, sex, and marriage ever written, the story follows an increasingly unhappy professor of biology as he turns to his science in an effort to understand what is happening to his marriage, only to have his efforts complicated by a former student-turned-colleague and her wealthy fiance. Richard is an ordinary man. He teaches biology at a small college and spends his days contemplating the reproductive strategies of the animal world. Unfortunately, his own reproductive strategies don't seem to be working as he gets progressively estranged from his wife - in part because he fathered two children. His best friend, a prominent man, offers a solution that, he claims, works for him and his wife. But would it work for Richard? And does it work for his friend? The story closely examines male sexuality and all aspects of the mating game, including the concept of "mateness points" and what can happen if one spouse outscores the other.
