Rhodry and his new dragon ally, Arzosah, have joined forces with the dwarven axemen and are rushing to the aid of the besieged town of Cengarn. Meanwhile, trapped in a town under siege, Carra and her unborn child is aided in her escape from Cengarn by Jill and Dalla who take her to Cerr Cawmen.
