Excerpt from Accounts and Papers, Vol. 46 of 60: Commercial Reports (Annual), Africa to China; Session 1, 30 January 1900-8 August 1900; Session 2, 3 December 1900-15 December 1900 The total quantity of coffee exported was tons, as com pared with 350 tons during the previous year. This marked increase is due partly to a large extent of fresh plantations coming into bearing, and partly also from the fact that the previous year was a bad one for coffee. The crop during the coming year is estimated to reach about tons. The value of coffee in the European markets has considerably fallen during last year. Owing, however, to the quality of Nyasaland coffee being exceptionally good and the prices higher than for most other coffees, the fall has not so seriously affected growers here as it has in many other coffee-growing countries. At the present date the coffee market seems to be taking a turn for the better, and plante1s in the Protectorate are looking to higher prices for the coming crop than they obtained for the last.
