The author, through a collection of short stories, recalls his career as he rose through the ranks and ultimately became the Police Chief in a small affluent town in northern California. He provides the reader a taste of what it was like to be a jailer and a bailiff. As a patrolman, a patrol sergeant, and finally a police chief he worked in areas of abject poverty and in communities of wealth. As he was promoted and eventually left the patrol car for the desk, the duties, demands, and expectations by the public, dramatically changed the job. As such, the author successfully adapted and continued finding joy in the job right up to the end of his career.
