Sagebrush Vistas is Bill Whistler's swan song as sheriff in 1800s Silvertown, Nevada. He is in his twenty-fifth invincible year as sheriff. In this story, his invincibility shows cracks. He exhibits flaws in judgement that get him into trouble. He makes mistakes and they nearly cost him his life. Twice he chases down the same outlaws. The first time he is mortally wounded, but is rescued by a nurse. The second time he is slightly wounded, but is again rescued by the nurse. Finally, when he faces the last outlaw, he is caught off balance; his deputy rescues him. In the end Whistler decides it is time to quit.
