I often suggest that one day if and when I return to teaching, I’ll incorporate many of the contemporary authors I’ve read into my syllabus. Artifice, by B F Jones, will definitely find a place. The collection is composed of flash and micro fiction. Jones gives us just enough information in these scenes to understand the gravity of the situations in which these characters find themselves; some of which are funny, others tragic. I’d compare this collection to James Joyce’s Dubliners in that it’s a compilation of people from different walks of life who experience “life-changing self-understanding or illumination.” Jones never hits you over the head with any of these revelations, and she has mastered the art of subtlety. However, these same subtle realizations have a sledge hammer impact. This is a worthwhile addition to any library, and a lesson in how powerful brevity can be. Pick up Artifice by B F Jones when it’s released. --Andrew Davie, Leviathan Rising Artifice is a diverse collection of atmospheric, unsettling, humorous and dark short stories. B F Jones really shows her writing skill through those various tales. - James Lilley, The Thousand Ghosts of You B F Jones is a master at showing us everyday darkness. She understands implicitly that life is about the things that go unsaid that ultimately lead us down to our darkest roads. - Scott Cumming, A chapbook About Nothing B F Jones writes flash fiction the way I hope to. I always look forward to reading anything with her name on it. - Travis J. Grundon, Editor/Contributor 4:20 NOIR
