God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son. IN these words St. Paul sets forth briefly, but with great force, the high privilege conferred on those who live under the dispensation of the Gospel. The scheme of redemption had indeed been, formed from the time when our first parents fell by disobedience: but this promise the Almighty made to Adam in obscure and general terms: in succeeding ages the language employed became plainer and more distinct, till "in the fulness of time" the Saviour was born, as on this day, " in the city of David." To the Jews of elder times God had made known his will, and had given them a law for the regulation of their conduct; but this law was conveyed to them by one, who, however distinguished among his brethren, was still but man, and partook of the frailties and imperfections belonging to our common nature. And the prophets, who, following after Moses," spake to the fathers of the Jewish nation at sundry times and in divers manners" by the command of God, were all "men of like passions with ourselves." But when the Father "bringeth the first-born into the world, he saith, Let all the angels of God worship him;" declaring of him, moreover, that " his throne is for ever and ever; that in the beginning he laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the works of his hands8." When therefore a Being of such exalted greatness calls upon his creatures to listen, "let all the earth keep silence before himb." But it is not submission only which the Redeemer demands of us, he asks for the tribute of willing and cheerful obedience...
