Volume I of the series on ASEAN-China Economic Relations focused on trends and patterns in bilateral economic relations between ASEAN countries on the one hand, and China on the other. Volume II focused on macro-economic and institutional developments in China and in selected sectors in ASEAN and China and their implications for bilateral economic relations. The third volume focused on developments in the global arena and in the Pacific and their impact on bilateral economic relations between ASEAN and China. This fourth volume examines the industrial restructuring in ASEAN and China. The substantive contents of this volume are divided into two parts. Part One focuses on the different experiences of ASEAN and China with industrial restructuring and its effects or implications on foreign economic relations in general, and bilaterally in particular. The contributions include: the juxtaposition of an ASEAN vs a Chinese perspective on how the principle of dynamic comparative advantage is affecting the international division of labour for ASEAN and China in the context of rapidly changing conditions of trade, investment, and production interactions in the Asia-Pacific and the larger global economy; analyses of different perspectives on the harnessing of essentially private foreign capital, the role of small- and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs in ASEAN) or township and village enterprises (TVEs in China) in the industrial development/restructuring in ASEAN and China. There is also a study on adjustment in China's industrial structure at the sectoral and regional levels, and a final study which examines the role and contribution of financial development to the industrial restructuring processes in ASEAN.
