This work investigates the musical arrangement of the traditional spiritual 'Rise Up, Shepherd, and Follow' for a modern choral ensemble. Composer Thornett provides a specific harmonic and instrumental framework designed to adapt a classic folk melody for SATB choir, accompanied by piano and optional woodwind instrumentation. The arrangement aims to preserve the cultural integrity of the original spiritual while introducing contemporary textures through instrumental interplay.

Music educators and choral directors frequently utilize this arrangement for its accessible yet sophisticated harmonic structure. Experts highlight the versatility of the optional woodwind parts as a key feature for small-to-medium ensemble performance.
