Railways today are faced with growing deficits and decreasing traffic which raises many questions as to their future. Several new determining factors in this mode of transport have appeared, however, such as high speed, combined transport, as well as competition resulting from the free access to networks. This publication is based on the work of a seminar organized by the ECMT.
