Gerald Barry, an Irish composer trained under Stockhausen and Kagel, utilizes these five pieces to explore the tension between vocal text and instrumental independence. The work serves as a technical exploration of how operatic motifs can be recontextualized for two pianos while maintaining the original dramatic intent of the source material.
