This book examines how social markers of difference affect and complicate the legal consciousness expressed by female city council members in Porto Alegre, Brazil. It brings novel methodological and theoretical contributions by applying legal consciousness studies, which are well-established in the Global North but little explored in Brazil, and proposing an analysis of legal consciousness through an intersectional lens. The author analyzes three main ways in which the councilwomen's legal consciousness manifests: law as insufficiency, role as overseers, and legality as hegemony and resistance.
