Exercise immunology is introduced as a prototype of stress. Possible underlying mechanisms are discussed, including neuroendocrinological, metabolic and physiological factors. Furthermore, the practical applications of exercise immunology with respect to infections, cancer, nutrition and aging are reviewed.
