The Book of Mormon is a complex work derived from many genres and sources, as shown here. This second volume includes Mormon's history as abridged and summarized from the Plates of Nephi, giving us a detailed history of Nephite civilization as kingship gave way to the reign of judges, being drawn from the writings of the high priests. As with other volumes, this one relies on footnotes to draw the book into the realm described by Tolkien throughout his vast body of writings, and articulated more fully in Words of the Faithful. The first volume includes the writings translated by Joseph Smith from the Plates of Nephi; and those given upon the priestly "small plates" kept by the line of Jacob, brother of Nephi. The third volume records the teachings and acts of the resurrected Jesus among the survivors of the destruction brought by his crucifixion, as well as Moroni's translation of the more ancient Jaredite writings, given alongside his father's and his own reflections at the end of his world.
