
Herbert Giles was an English diplomat and sinologist. (sinology: the study of China and things Chinese) Giles was a professor of Chinese at Cambridge and later at Columbia University. Giles wrote many books on the Chinese language and Chinese history. Giles wrote The Civilization of China as an introductory book with the hope that after reading this work the reader will be interested in a more in depth study of the country and its people. Religions of Ancient China is part of the series Religions: Ancient and Modern. Subjects included are Confucianism -- Taoism -- Materialism -- Buddhism and other religions.
