Reprinted from the third edition of Conington's translation into English verse of Roman poet Horace's four books of Latin lyric verse, together with his Carmen Saeculare, a secular hymn in Sapphic meter commissioned by Emperor Augustus in 17BC. The first edition of this translation was published in 1863.
