The Infinite Reaches (of the sky), introducing the two loves of Paul Cowley, is played out between Derby, Darlington, and the Western Front. Paul’s first love is Aviation, which he feels has been sidetracked by the war. Convalescent in 1916, he becomes close to the troubled playgirl Dianne Cousins. Then, after some months of flying during the build-up to the ‘Big Push’ on the Somme, he falls in love with hairdresser and couturière-to-be Catherine Tomlinson, realising too late for his peace of mind that she wears a wedding ring.
