Heinrich Khunrath (1560-1605) was a key alchemical writer at the turn of the 16th into the 17th centuries. His best known work was the ‘Amphitheatre of Eternal Wisdom’ of 1609. He wrote about alchemical ideas within a Christian mystical approach. This work on Hyle, also referred to as his Confession, is an in-depth exploration of the Prima Materia, the substance from which all matter is composed. During the Creation this separated itself out from the Hyle and the Chaos that existed at the beginning of time. From this Prima Materia the alchemist was able to make the Universal Philosophers’ Stone, which could transmute one metal into another.
