The Lord of the Rings is very literally centered on the long and intricate history of the Rings of Power and their role in determining the fate of Middle Earth. Here is a breakdown of The Rings of Power, starting with the rings that were handed to the races of Men and Dwarves, moving on to the rings that the Elves kept secret, and ending with the One Ring that was created by and for Sauron himself. The rings were actually curses disguised as gifts; while they granted anyone who wore them immense wealth and power, they also warped their minds and revoked their capacity for free will, making their money and power meaningless. It should be mentioned that very few people were genuinely able to withstand the allure of the rings, particularly the One Ring. Galadriel struggled to resist the ring as well since she could see the future she could create with its power and the havoc it would unleash.
