
In 1985, when browsing a book on the Ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, Eurico Poggi was taken with the absolute certainty that the painting registered as Moses and the Bronze Serpent is the representation of a poem called The Hymn of the Pearl. Very popular in the ancient world, the poem was among the texts known as Acts of Thomas, by the Apostle Thomas. The connection of the poem with the famous paintings seemed non-existent. One day, Eurico Poggi found a short account of the first mass held in the Sistine Chapel. This account mentions that, in 1483, the Chapel was consecrated to Our Lady of the Assumption. Suddenly, Eurico Poggi recalls a Christian tradition that describes the Apostle Thomas as the only witness of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
