Excerpt from Ancient Chronology, Vol. 1 Chronology is necessarily a very uninteresting subject. At the same time, it is the skeleton of history, and the essential basis for historical research, without which no trustworthy results in the study of ancient history, civilization, or religion may be attained. I have, therefore, no excuse to offer for the appearance of this volume. Although I recognize the value of the scholarly efforts which have lately been made in this field, the rapid course of new discoveries in the Orient tends to antiquate any work which attempts to deal adequately with such a broad subject. Whatever has been done hitherto, and however praiseworthy the researches of modem scholars may be, the time is ripe for a new investigation of the whole subject. The present volume is an expansion of lectures delivered last fall before the Oriental Society of the Western Theological Seminary, Chicago, and is published in response to requests made by several members of that society. It was at first intended to issue it as an introduction to Side-Lights on Biblical Chronology, but the material was too extensive, and would have made that volume too bulky. For this reason I decided to publish the more technical matter separately under the present title. This volume attempts to cover the ancient chronology of Palestine, Assyria, Babylonia, and Egypt, down to 1050 B.C. The period from this date to the Christian era will be treated in a subsequent book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
