The Oldest object of worship was probably the bull Apis, a part of the veneration of animals which preceded the higher theistic ideas. The temple Of Apis was therefore the primitive settlement Of the place. But it was eclipsed by the great establishment of Ptah, which occupied as large a space as the enclosure of the temple of Amen at Karnak.
