Queenship in Ancient Egypt and Israel derives from a panel discussion by international scholars at the 1996 annual meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature in which the panelists presented and discussed the nature and meaning of queenship in these two cultures. While scholars have often addressed the meaning of kingship in ancient Egypt and ancient Israel, comparing and contrasting them, few have paid attention to queenship in any comparative manner. This volume represents an initial corrective to this lack.
