Excerpt from Transactions of the Society of Biblical Archaeology, Vol. 1 The need of such a Society as it was then proposed to institute was inferred from the facts that existing Societies were employed in the study of one special science, or group Of sciences, in which Biblical Archaeology had only an inter polated position; and, that Biblical researches had Of late so far outgrown the limits of an occasional paper, or ordinary meeting, and had resolved themselves into so many distinct branches Of detail, that the subject required to be treated as a whole. Yet, at the same time, as the Asiatic, Geographical, Literary, and Palestine Societies had cognate pursuits, it might be expected that they would fraternize and co-operate with the proposed Association.
