Excerpt from A History of Greek Literature: From the Earliest Period to the Death of Demosthenes This, like the preceding volume in this series, "is designed mainly for Students at oar Universities and Public Schools, and for such as are preparing for the Indian Civil Service or other advanced Examinations." But it is also intended to be intelligible, and, it is hoped, will be found interesting to those who know no Greek. With this purpose, Greek and all points involving Greek scholarship have been relegated to the Notes and Appendices. A list of the works consulted and utilised in writing this book would occupy many pages. To note on each page, in the German fashion, every obligation and reference would swell the work to twice its present size. I must therefore content myself with saying that I have endeavoured to draw on all the best treatises on the subject in English, French, and German.
