Excerpt from Lives of Greek Statesmen: Second Series The lives given in the first volume of this series were pre sented to the reader as a picture of the Greek world down to the close of the struggle with Persia. I undertook in the present volume to deal with the statesmen whose lives be long, for the most part, to the period of the fatal struggle between Athens and Sparta. I have, however, been oh liged to confine myself to the lives of those statesmen whose political activity belongs almost wholly to the time preceding the catastrophe of the Athenian armament at Syracuse. The third volume will cover a larger period. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
