Excerpt from Ancient History The advent of the Messias, which is the crowning event of history, divides it into two parts: Ancient History, or that time which preceded the birth of Jesus Christ, and Modern History, or the time which has elapsed since that event. This division is so natural that, by referring all events to Jesus Christ, we give to history its unity: in ancient times by Sacred History, or that of the people chosen to prepare the way for the advent of the Messias, and in modern times by the History of the Church, or that of the society set up to propagate throughout the world the work of the Saviour. Prevailing usage, however, divides universal history into three parts: Ancient History, from the creation to the division of the Roman Empire, in 395; Mediœval History, from the said division to the taking of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks, in 1453; Modem History, from the taking of Constantinople to contemporary events.
