But the army of Alexander was comparatively a numerous one. The country through which he marched pre sented few obstacles. He conquered as he went. He lefi no enemy in his rear. But he lived not to see again his native land. Subduing all but himself, he died at last, a prey to his own evil passions, ingloriously at Babylon.
