
Excerpt from Herodotus, Vol. 5: Terpsichore; With Introduction, Notes and Map The people inhabiting the mountains, valleys and plains of this country were divided into very numerous tribes, of which Herodotos mentions the names of eighteen', and of which about 50 altogether are known to us from various other sources. They were then, as they still to a great extent are, fierce and barbarous; and the Persian conquest does not seem to have penetrated into the interiorz. It was the cities and tribes on the coasts of the Aegean, the Hellespont, and the Euxine that were the object of attack, and which submitted more or less completely to Megabazos. These coasts were studded with Greek colonies; and thus the Spread of the Persian power was once more placed in antagonism to Hellenic civilization, however distant from the centre of Hellenic life.
