But the Athenian invasion could not be cut short, and it seemed better to couple it and the Carthaginian invasion together. The two fill up the space between Sicily as I painted it in the last chapter of my second volume, Sicily free and independent but of no prominent account beyond its own borders, and Sicily, as we shall see it in the next volume, free no longer, but the seat of the greatest power in the European world.
