A handful of times in the history of the world, a previously obscure people living on the fringes of civilization, burst upon the scene and within a short time changed the course of history. The first to do so were the Macedonians of the Fourth Century BCE. This feat was largely the work of two men. Philippos inherited Macedon, enlarged it, and brought the Greeks under control. His son, Alexandros (Alexander the Great), turned east and took over the great Persian Empire. Although Alexandros died young and unity was lost, Macedonian Kings ruled most of the western world for more than 200 more years. By forcing east and west together, Alexandros laid the foundations for the Hellenistic Civilization. This is the story of those rulers. Most of the time the Macedonian Empire is shown by a single map, with another map or two devoted to the division of the empire. This atlas will go into much greater detail with as many maps as necessary to tell the complete story. Breaking the narrative into smaller, more discrete segments, makes it more understandable. This was originally intended to be a single book, but the story proved to be too complicated for that. This first part is the story of the initial conquests of Philippos and Alexandros, and the wars of their immediate successors. The next book will cover the ups and downs of the following kings up to their final conquest by Rome. • Unprecedented detail, 126 individual maps instead of the usual 2 or 3. • Each map focuses on a specic operation and time to explore it in more detail. • All maps drawn using GIS technology • Limited text allows more space for the maps themselves. • Seven pages of detailed chronology. • Comprehensive index includes details about persons and places.
