A connection with the Atlantis story was immediately made by many with the archaeological discovery in the 1960's of an advanced Bronze Age civilization on the southern coast of Santorini called Ancient Akrotiri. It is also known as the 'Pompeii of the Aegean, ' as covered by the Thera eruption, and many investigators quickly began to posture Thera and Akrotiri were the basis for the story of Atlantis.
