Twenty-one papers from a colloquium held at Nicosia in 2001 take a variety of approaches to the study of ruptures and continuities' in Mediterranean identities and representations. The papers, in English and French, are divided into five thematic sections that focus on movements in thought and how the Mediterranean has been represented, the Mediterranean in oral literature and writing, the Mediterranean as a symbolic form, poetic interpretations, language and identity, and ethnicity, especially between Turks, Greeks, Armenians and Maronites. Many of the papers examine Cypriot issues (following on from the 2001 conference which focused on Cyprus and the East Mediterranean), although the overall scope of the papers is much broader - from Ted Hughes and Lawrence Durrell to the Mediterranean in theatres and tourist guides.
