(2) The root idea of the genitive is very plain in expressions of time, the genitive of selection, this rather than some other time. In Luke 18:7 /ue/xis Kox Wktos do not emphasize the wholeness of either day or night as in Luke 2:37 (tokto Koi rmipav), but rather that both day and night are included. So also /te'o-ijs Wktos (Matt. 25:6). See also To XowroV (Heb. 10:13) and rov AonroS (Gal. 6:17). In Matt. 24:20 the distinction is seen between the genitive xSvos as the case of genus and the locative o-af3fidrw expressing a point of time. It is not strange to see Sis rov o-afifidrov (Luke 18:12) and a.ira£ rov eviavrov (Heb. 9:7). So Mapia 'laKwfiov (Luke 24:10) is James's Mary, which might be his mother, wife, or daughter. We learn from elsewhere that it is his mother. Often the genitive is used simply with the article, where the context explains, as o! rov Xpxrrov (Gal. 5:24), especially the neuter article as To KatVapos (Mark 12:17). (4) Indeed the genitive may express identity (apposition) as iroAeis SoSo/xav Kal Top.6ppas (2 Pet. 2:6), ij Olk...
