Aided by a band of Greek heroes, Jason undertakes a perilous voyage aboard the ship Argo, encountering various challenges. In Colchis, he is aided by the sorceress Medea, who falls in love with him and uses her magic to help him succeed. Apollonius was a Homeric scholar, and was obviously inspired by Homer’s work; but Apollonius expanded on the ancient Greek epic poetry, and may have been the first poet to explore romance in his work. The Argonautica is perhaps most remembered for the passion between Jason and Medea, and was believed to have influenced later Roman poet-authors Valerius Flaccus, Catullus, Ovid and Virgil.
