Artificial irrigation was used in the Marib oasis in modern Yemen at least 5 millennia ago. This is one of the conclusions of this geomorphological study of one of the Near East's richest areas, famed in antiquity for the size of its dam which was said to provide water for 30,000 inhabitants.
