Homer is considered as the greatest ancient Greek poet, in Western literature. Even though his identity and his existence are shrouded in mystery, his two epic poems, the Iliad and the Odyssey, have had an immeasurable impact on the literary world and beyond. Both of these great heroic Greek poems are attributed to Homer. The Iliad is believed to be written in the 8th century BCE. It explains the events that took place during the Trojan War. It presents the legendary conflict between the Greeks and the Trojans. Iliad centers the wrath of Achilles against Hector the great Trojan prince who killed his best friend. Iliad gives us the true essence of themes of honor, heroism, and destructive power of pride. The Odyssey on the other hand is high likely to be written after the Iliad and tells us the story of Greek hero Odysseus on his long and treacherous journey returning from the Trojan War. In his journey back home, he faces countless of obstacles including tests of his courage and cunning. The Odyssey presents the themes of perseverance and loyalty. The Iliad and the Odyssey are masterpieces of Western literature that stand enduring the test of time, providing insight into the basic human values and beliefs of ancient times and still inspiring new generations of readers and writers alike.
