Ralph, or Banulph, de Dacre, married Margaret, sole daughter and heir of Thomas de Multon, the grandson of the above-named Thomas, having carried her off by night from Warwick Castle, while phe was ward to Edward III. This Ralph in 1335. got license to castellate his mansion at Naworth. 4 The boundary of the park is not visible now, but following the line in the map, it'passed along the fence about half a furlong south of the old church, and following the road towards Brampton, till it came within about two furlongs of the turnpike road; thence it turned to the sum 1:. crossing the Brampton and Carlisle road, about 1J furlongs west of the Town-foot Farm-house, and continuing that line for about that distance beyond; thence it turned westward, and ran nearly straight till it crossed the above road again, at a place where it makes a bend, about 2 furlongs west of Middle Farm; thence it made a line towards Irthington Church for about 2 furlongs; and curving back towards the east, joined the road from the ford at Irthington, about a furlong east of the river Irthing. Mr. John Bell has referred us to a source from whence the date of this old map may be ascertained nearly, for it bears no date whatever. On the map Lancelot Carleton is stated to hold the park, and a great quantity of land iu the Lordship of Brampton besides. In a note in Sir Walter Scott's "Lay of the last Minstrel," there is some account of a trial by combat, which the said Lancelot Carleton held, April 8, 1602, with Thomas Musgrave of Bewcastle, whom he had charged before the Privy Council with treason.
