Funerary monuments in stone - whether sculpted or inscribed - emerged and spread in Gallia Lugdunensis as a result from the conquest and integration of this territo4 into the Roman Empire. They signal major changes in the way communities took care of the dead and pr©·served their memory. They also reflect the dynamics and transformations people living there experienced? bethey institutional, social or religious. This book offers a comprehensive study of these tombs and epitaphs, analysing three complementary dimensions: firstly, it considers their materiality, by examining their main monumental forms; secondly, it discusses their religious and legal statuses, as well as the ceremonies which took place around them; thirdly, it highlights the part played by the actors of the commemoration of the deceased, as well as ifs visual or discursive forms, thereby showing how diverse the funerary landscape of a Gallic province was under the Roman Empire."--Page 4 of cover.
