About The Art of Love “Let battles be with the Parthians, but be there peace with your refined mistress; mirth too, and whatever besides contains a reason for love.” Ars Amatoria; or, The Art of Love is a 3-book series of mock-didactic elegies by ancient Roman poet Ovid, written in 2 AD. This edition features the english translation by Henry T. Riley, published in 1885. Ovid was severely criticised for the work, which playfully advises men on romantic conquest, while instructing women in the arts of seduction. The work nonetheless proved extremely popular and achieved huge success. Here Ovid’s skill both as a poet and cultural commentator are brilliantly displayed, as he irreverently explores the joys and difficulties of love.
