Excerpt from Selected Letters of the Younger Pliny The text of the present edition is constituted on the basis of new and complete collations of most of the manuscripts cited, and of the careful study to a greater or less extent of many other manuscripts of the Letters. The collations were made during the course of two journeys on the continent of Europe, one in 1895, and another (of fourteen months) in 1898-99, which were chiey devoted to this task. I desire to acknowledge the great kindness and courtesy shown by Father Ehrle, Prefect of the Vatican Library, by the Prefect and other officials of the Laurentian and Riccardian Libraries at Florence, and indeed by all the authorities of collections of manu scripts to whom I have had occasion to appeal for permission to carry on my work.
